Technically, if you thought of and created something that you didn’t know already existed, you invented it as well.

My mother asked me what it was I wished to do with my life

I said I wanted to be a pianist living in Italy, not necessarily a successful one; just one who plays music at a small restaurant that perhaps people will fall in love to

She told me to aim higher

I said I wanted to wake up in Paris to the smell of coffee on a cold winter morning, where my feet dread touching the cold wooden floor when I wake. I imagine myself wrapping up warm and making my way to the train station where I would busk on my guitar and smile at strangers on their way to work. Perhaps one of them would smile back

She reminded me that I did not know how to play the guitar and nor did I like coffee

I told my mother that I did not want to leave a single mark; it was invisibility I yearned – to make a person or two feel good or better, even for just a moment, than they were without their knowing why, without being able to put a name or face to the feeling

My mother told me to aim higher

I reminded her that I could not. For if I aimed any higher, my small fingers would touch the stars and that may leave a mark

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
